2017 WSJHS Annual Meeting

Please join us in celebrating our accomplishments over the past year, sharing our vision for the Society and electing a new Board of Directors.

The Washington State Jewish Historical Society invites you to the 2017 Annual Meeting on Sunday, November 5th.

RSVP using this link.

The meeting will include board nominations and elections and the Meta Buttnick Award presentation. The 2017 Meta Buttnick aware recipient is Albert Israel, former WSJHS Board President. Tributes in honor of Albert Israel can be made at this link.

The Stan Tobin Lecture is “Forgotten Faces: Tacoma’s Jewish Pioneers,” with local historian and author Deb Freedman.

Deb will share stories about the creation of Tacoma’s Dry Goods and Wet Goods: Nineteenth Century Jewish Pioneers, in response to the question, “Grandma, where did you get the pictures?” The book, published by Tacoma Historical Society Press, presents the previously undocumented history of Tacoma’s Jewish community during the latter half of the 1800s, based on nearly two decades of the author’s primary research. An exhibit of the same name was on display last fall at the Tacoma Historical Society Museum, located at 919 Pacific Avenue.

Deb Freedman is retired from twenty years with the Tacoma Public Library, where she learned to enjoy doing research and storytelling. Those skills have helped her in her second career as a volunteer, researcher, writer and presenter. An award-winning teacher and author, Deb previously created two titles in Tacoma Historical Society’s series of 21 Tales books for elementary students.

Tacoma Historical Society is a community-supported volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) charitable, nonprofit corporation, and is dedicated to the preservation, promotion and presentation of the history of the City of Tacoma and its people. Tacoma Historical Society works to forge connections between past and present generations, fostering an appreciation of the past and a sense of place within our community’s history.
